Event Itenerary
* Four-day Elnu Abenaki encampment that will include dozens of activities-- traditional craft demonstrations, performances, food events, music, storytelling, and more. Also, music and dance performances by Abenaki and Mohawk youth. July 9-12, Hoehl Park behind ECHO Center, Burlington Waterfront. Sponsor: ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain. Schedule and program available at www.vtindigenous.com.
* Three nights of Territoire Feminins performance by world-class Abenaki dancer/choreographer Marie-Claude Rodrigue. 8pm, July 9 ands 10. 8:30pm, July 11. Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center.
* Native American film festival at the Echo Center. July 9-12.
* Native American concert of traditional and contemporary music by acclaimed Grammy winning Iroquois performer and recording artist Joanne Shenandoah. Also on the stage: Iroquois blues band, Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers. Noon to 4:30pm, Waterfront Park Main Stage – Sat. July 11.
* Champlain Valley Stage performance by Willard Way, country music band lead by Nulhegan Chief Luke Willard. July 11.
* Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth. Staged reading of Native American comedy/drama by award-winning Ojibwa playwright Drew Hayden Taylor. Performed by Tantoo Cardinal, Gary Farmer and others. 8pm, July 5-7. Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center.
* Iroquois choreographer Gaetan Gingris will serve as guest artist choreographer and dancer for The New World pageant 8:30pm, Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11, Flynn Theater. More than a dozen additional Native dancers will participate. Performance preparation includes research and construction of regional Native costumes.
* Native performers Gary Farmer, Tantoo Cardinal, and Marge Bruchac will participate in the July 2nd edition of the Queen City Radio Hour. 8pm, Flynn Theater.
* Native American food event, July 9th, at Magnolia’s restaurant—as part of the taste of Champlain food event. 5:30-8:30pm.
* Native people from throughout the region are invited to join indigenous participants for the July 11th Champlain 400 parade. 5pm, Main Street, Burlington. Particpants gather at 3pm. Call for details.
* The Creator’s Game. Three-day Iroquois lacrosse clinic and exhibition program for all ages. July 10-12. Burlington High School and Essex Fairgrounds.
* Champlain Forum on the Next Hundred Years. Forum of diversity led by Fran Stoddard, featuring Native historians and scholars David George (Iroquois), Darren Bonaparte (Mohawk), and Marge Bruchac (Abenaki). Saturday July 9-11. Noon-4:30pm, Contois Auditorium.
* Ecumenical Service. Participation by Native American spiritualists in a lakeside morning service, July 12th. Time and place TBA.
