The Koasek (People of the White Pines), have centered around Koas (Place of the White Pines) now known as Newbury VT and Haverhill NH for thousands of years. The rich meadows were reknown to the Abenaki for it's fertile soil and abundant fish and wildlife. The koas, which are now called the little Oxbow and Big Oxbow, was reknown for the rare strain of corn that was grown by the Indians. As settlers moved into the area the corn was shared with the new families to the region. One family of the area took great pride in the preservation of the corn they were gifted so many generations ago by the Indians of the koas. Over 25 years ago theGreen's shared the corn seeds with the Calley family who inturn took great great pride in growing the rare strain of corn each season. In 2006, the Calley's gifted the corn seeds to Nancy Millette. The Tribal garden failed that season but one tribal member's garden has prospered each year. We are delighted our rare Indiginous Corn is back in the hands of decendants of the Koas Meadows.
